What Is Plastic Surgery?
In this celebrity fueled world the word ‘plastic-surgery’ is no longer said in hushed tones among a carefully selected group of friends and is no longer greeted with disapproving looks and judgement. It wasn't always like this folks, even though plastic surgery has been around since Ancient Egypt, it hasn't always been socially acceptable.
Let’s take a look at where plastic surgery was and where it is now, let’s in fact, look at what plastic surgery really is. In essence, plastic surgery is a procedure that a patient chooses to go under therefore it is known as elective surgery or an elective procedure. Plastic Surgery is usually costly however it has the power to change a patient’s life for the better thus making plastic surgery extremely popular… if something has the power to offer you a better life, why not explore this option?
The plastic surgery procedures that are most common include breast implants, breast reductions, breast lifts, rhinoplasty (or a nose job), brow lifts, chin implants, face lips, liposuction, lip implants and a popular new procedure called labiaplasty. (Yup, that would be in the labia area ladies.) The list goes on and on. What was once often deemed a vain attempt to hold onto ones beauty or youth, has now become a way of life in modern society.
And why shouldn't it be? It’s been around long enough. From Ancient Egypt to Ancient India and of course, to Ancient Rome, plastic surgery has been around longer than most people know. The ancient Egyptians were performing the practices of plastic surgery on the dead by stuffing bandages into the cheeks and belly’s of mummies to preserve their beauty – similar to what we do with silicone these days isn't it? Sanskrit texts have been found from Ancient India describing surgeries to repair noses and ears on those wounded in battle. And Ancient Rome, a culture that praised beauty and perfection (similar to the 21st Century mind you) and looked down on anyone with some sort of abnormality took matters into their own hands by performing acts of plastic surgery on these ‘unattractive’ people. In a text by Cornelius Celsus called ‘De re medicina,’ he describes a breast reduction surgery performed on a man who the people looked at with disdain because of his obesity.
These days plastic surgery has become a simple procedure and has the ability to make a person feel better about themselves, not only can plastic surgery be used to add to the aesthetic appeal of a person it can also be used for reconstructive purposes, correcting an injury or abnormality. However, it is mostly used for aesthetic reasons these days (let’s be honest.)
This is not to say that plastic surgery will fix anyone’s self esteem issues however it can help when a person has thought long and hard about the procedure that they elect to undergo. Both men and women are going this route, and I say, why the hell not? If they were doing it in Ancient Egypt why shouldn't we be doing it now?
